John of Leyden
(1509–36)
   Rebel.
   John was born Jan Beukelszoon. He was converted to militant Anabaptism in the late 1520s. With Jan Mattheys, he took control of the city of Haarlem and, after Mattheys was killed, he was crowned king of the ‘New Zion’. He instituted a system of common ownership, introduced polygamy and executed his opponents. In 1536, Protestant and Catholic forces besieged the city and John was killed in the battle. Leaders such as John gave Anabaptism a reputation for revolutionary lawlessness.
